A Better Marriage Starts Here...

On Tuesday this week, I was driving my kids to school, and I missed the critical turn that I must take to head in the right direction. For 95% of my drives in my truck, at this particular intersection, I need to drive straight ahead. Almost always, that’s what sets me on the right course as I head off to church, the grocery store, and most of the world from my house. But when I drive my kids to school, I have to turn left… And on Tuesday, I mindlessly forgot what I was doing, and I missed the turn. 

This happens in life. We’re traveling on our journey, but we get distracted by other things and mindlessly forget to make the necessary choices to stay on course. We’re heading somewhere, but now where we intend, so we end up going in the wrong direction.

In other words, drift happens!

One of the main places this can happen is in marriage... Marriage is a good gift from God that is meant to bring joy, cause our lives to thrive, and glorify Jesus! At its best, in a marriage that is built strongly upon God and operating in healthy ways, it will show the world a picture of the beauty of Jesus and the Church! This is what the Apostle Paul teaches us in Ephesians 5:22-33 – marriage is a gift from God that is meant to glorify Christ!

When we start in marriage, we have every intention of living up to God’s design in our relationship. We want to love well, care for one another, and enjoy the fruits of deep relational intimacy. That’s our heading, and we have every intention of going that direction. 

But just like on my drive… We can get off course so easily! 

Life gets busy, we get distracted, and before we know it, we’re headed further and further away from each other. Drift happens! 

Thankfully, on Tuesday, when I missed my turn, my daughter spoke up to say, “Dad, didn’t we need to turn back there?” She caught my attention, pulled me back from distraction, and interrupted my drift. I realized what was going wrong, and was able to quickly correct things. For our marriages, when we’re off course, sometimes this is exactly what we need – a divine interruption to set things right again.  

That is exactly what Re|engage is meant to be! 

Re|engage is a marriage ministry here at Emmaus Church that is designed to be a safe place for couples to reconnect in their marriage. It is for couples who are in a good spot but want to grow into a great spot. It is also for couples who are in absolute crisis and really need some help.
